7.12.2011 - A climber who died after a fall in the Scottish Highlands has been

A climber who died after a fall in the Scottish Highlands has been named by police as 65-year-old Tom Clark from Aberdeen.

Mr Clark suffered the accident while up one of the mountains above the Cluanie Inn in Glen Shiel.

The wider circumstances of the accident have not been disclosed, but those who are heading up to the mountains with a climbing rope may wish to take extra precautions in the colder autumn weather, not least as some areas of the Highlands are now experiencing snowfall.north face denali

In addition to having the right footwear and climbing gear, warm jackets may help to prevent exposure to cold, particularly in the event of an accident when people have to wait to be rescued instead of being able to get down the mountain by themselves.

The Glen Shiel area is well known for its high concentration of Munros, such as Aonach Air Crith, Sgurr a'Bhealaich Dearg and Saileag.

The Scottish Highlands is set to see more snow on the mountains, which may excite skiing fans and make walkers consider their equipment.cheap north face

According to the Met Office mountain weather forecast for today (October 17th), rain above the Cairngorms will turn to snow above 600 metres (1,968 ft) and may even appear as low as 400 metres, with lots of hill fog and wind to contend with as well.

Such developments would suggest wearing waterproofs, good boots, warm walking trousers and having a map and compass are the least people will need to take on the hills.moncler down coats

The West Highlands is also tipped to see snow, with the loch Lomond and Trossachs area getting falls at 700 metres early on, lowering to 500 metres later in the day.

However, claims that the whole of Britain could be blanketed in snow this month were questioned recently by Met Office chief executive John Hirst in an article in the Times.

Suggesting such long-range forecast claims say more about the British "obsession" with the weather than any factual data, he stated: "The scientific capability does not exist to allow such extremes to be identified on a long-range timescale."

7.12.2011 - Those who like to go walking in the Lake District could

Those who like to go walking in the Lake District could be about to see the area in a new light, after the publication of the results of a study into its prehistory.

On October 30th, the findings of an eight-year research project by Lancaster University will be presented in Keswick, which will reveal more about life and events on the prehistoric uplands of the national park, as well as other parts of the UK.

The national park authority noted that the survey found many previously undiscovered Neolithic stone axe factories in the central area of the national park and a range of bronze age features in the western fells.

National park archaeologist John Hodgson said: "The British uplands have a rich prehistoric archaeology including the remains of settlement and agriculture and ritual landscapes of standing stones, stone rows, stone circles and burial cairns."north face denali

The findings will compare discoveries in the Lake District with those in Dartmoor and Snowdonia.

Existing well-known ancient sites include the 4,000-year-old axe factory above Great Langdale and the Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick.

Those who like to go walking in the Brecon Beacons may be pleased to hear that a mountain rescue team serving the area has gained an award.cheap north face

Dyfed-Powys Police has issued a Certificate of Appreciation to Brecon Mountain Rescue Team for the work they do in helping people who get into trouble on the mountains.

The recognition comes after the team put in over 2,000 hours of voluntary service in the past year.

Commenting on the award, spokesman for the Mountain Rescue team Mark Jones said: "While members willingly volunteer to assist lost and injured people in our community, this year has been a particularly difficult and demanding year and the team members are grateful to have their commitment acknowledged."

He added that the team has a very good working relationship with the local police force.moncler down coats

The Brecon Beacons contains the highest peaks in the southern half of Britain, with the highest being Pen-y-Fan at 2,906 ft.

Other notable mountains in the national park include Waun Rydd, Fan Brycheiniog and Waun Fach.

6.12.2011 - Those heading for the Highlands to enjoy walking in their warm

Those heading for the Highlands to enjoy walking in their warm winter coats may need to revise their plans after a road in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park was closed.

The A83 has been shut at Rest and Be Thankful on the western edge of the area after a landslip, which has followed days of heavy rain in the area.

It means any walkers looking to head westwards from the central belt to areas such as Glen Fyne may wish to go elsewhere. north face denali

The road closure is not the only one visitors to the Highlands will face this month, as part of the A82 is set to shut for the removal of a large and unstable rock on adjacent Forestry Commission Land between December 9th and 12th.

Such work will take place just south of Fort William.

One alternative option for visitors planning to be in Fort William will be to arrive by rail, as trains from Glasgow travel along a different route to traffic on the A82, entering the town from the east after skirting Rannoch Moor. cheap north face

A renovated bothy is ready for visitors to use while exploring the Scottish lowlands.

Greensykes Bothy in the Eskdalemuir Forest in the Scottish Borders will be able to welcome walkers and cyclists arriving with their backpacks after the owner allowed the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA) to convert it from an open shelter, Grough reports.

Work by MBA volunteers on the three-room property in recent months has now made it fit for this use, offering a place to stop overnight in the remote spot, over six miles from Eskdalemuir village.

An MBA spokesperson said: "Its owner was keen that it should continue to be available for use by walkers and cyclists. Its adoption by the MBA will ensure that this continues to be the case." moncler down coats

Other work being carried out by MBA volunteers is set to take place in April next year to improve the Meanach Bothy in the west highlands.

The property lies close to the western end of the Mamores range, allowing munroists an overnight stop before climbing the likes of Binnein Mor, Binnein Beag and Sgurr Eilde Mor.
